Smartcar?  How come everything that is labeled smart isn't necessarily so.  It is usually tied in with the people who have money who don't want us to have anything.  The smartcar doesn't survive accidents very well, so what is it with these subsubsubsubcompact vehicles everyone is driving to save the environment?  Nothing more than they don't want us to have anything.  Drive around less of a car, but keep the payments coming.

I take exception to your summation.  For its lack of frontal structure to ABSORB crash energy, the Daimler-Benz engineers did a fantastic job of retaining the passenger "cell" integrity to the point the door still opened and closed.  Try that with a Hyundai!

While I am on my soapbox, let me tell you a story I gleaned recently.

Testers obtained two brand-new GM & Ford "HD" pickem' up trucks. One with a stock IC engine, the other was fully electric.

The quoted range of the IC gas truck's tank was 380 miles.  The EV truck range was 285 miles per full charge.

The two trucks were hitched to identical 4000GW campers and driven to find their towing range.

The IC gas truck was still humming along with over a half tank of gas when the EV truck rolled to a stop after towing for.............................................

87 MILES

Problems with the push for electric vehicles.
If we go off of the petrodollar, what will we be buying things with?  The carbon credit?
Keep your eye on Yamaha/Toyota. Solid state batteries. Buying electric now is a fail.
