Not far from me is an Alpaca farm.
Husband and wife run it, they sell the wool
and the meat. Very prosperous operation.
I will always appreciate my time working on
different farms, hard work, sweat, the smells
and all.

Hauling hay at night, tromping greens, hauling watermelons, cleaning the chicken processing plants. Catching 60K to 80K broiler chickens then clearing out the chicken shit from 60 X 800ft broiler house. I still don't like memories of the broilers.
My dad had a full time job to support his farming habit. So I was the oldest of four and had to help dad milk cows in the morning then do it almost by myself in the evening. Sometimes dad would get home to help me finish up. I had to beg my brothers to feed the calves and chickens. Then I had anywhere from 50 to 250 chicks in a shed I was trying to get to selling size. I spent many a sleepless night caring for those little bastards. But they made me enough money so I could be on the alpine ski racing team. Fuck no wonder I never got that good, I was always so freaking tired. Holy chit. Just reading that makes me cringe.
Some people really don't know. There was no reason for my father to make us learn animal husbandry. He did extremely well in the printing industry. But, still a dumbass ol'hillbilly right. As I've stated before, as I got older I understood and was grateful.

Around here they have been leaning on the small chicken and egg folks. There is a disease that comes from wild waterfowl that spreads to chickens, so as soon as it is detected they kill the flock to prevent spread to “the food producing” chicken flocks.
A lady here lost 300 birds. What can you do? We have Canada geese, Snow geese, Brewers geese, heron, pine siskins and all sorts of seagulls. They land in the fields, they poop..things spread.
So.. I was thinking bun buns for meat and leather/fur. I have not heard of them culling buns yet.
There is a cuteness issue I have to get over for food animals. I like meat. And I love living things.

I figured this would be a fun thread. Keep those chicken jokes coming.

A farmer had a haunted coop.
Turns out it was a poultrygiest.
What did the chicken plant in her garden?
Eggplants.
What do you get when you cross a chicken and a cement mixer?
A bricklayer.

A bricklayer. Why'd the chicken cross the road?
She heard a man was laying bricks on the other side and this she had to see.

I worked on a chicken farm some years ago. Sure isn't in the top 10 of jobs I've worked. And you don't look at KFC the same.
I would love a homestead though. I would get 2 of these as me mates. Loved them from the first time I saw them at Syd Zoo. Be awesome pack animals too.

Many years ago I had an idea to have rabbits for meat. I built a 4 compartment rabbit pen. 2 rooms for the does, 1 for the buck and a larger one for a grow out pen. It all worked great until it came time for slaughtering the bunnies. I found that I couldn't do it.
I don't understand why. I don't like to slaughter animals , but I do it out of necessity, but I couldn't do a bunny

I love chicken eggs. But raising chickens is a full time job and I am retired. I thought you said that you had to go back to work filling shelves at the C&B?
A friend of mine tried chickens twice, her husband didn't put netting on the top of their runs and the foxes got them both times. She's forgiven the foxes, but the bible says kill the foxes. That will upset the lefties.
