How to “read” the Woolly Bear Caterpillar

According to the folklore, the winter will be colder and snowier the longer the black bands are on each caterpillar. If there is a long band of brown through the middle of the caterpillar, the winter will be milder.

The position of the dark band is supposed to tell you which part of the winter will be the coldest. If the head of the caterpillar is dark, it would indicate the beginning of winter will be cold and severe. If the tail is dark, it would indicate the end of winter will be severe.

The woolly bear caterpillar has 13 segments to its body. It has been said that this correlates to the 13 weeks of winter.
Again, this is weather folklore and used for fun each year. It is not an actual forecast. You can see this week’s forecast here.

@counterintelligence here in Phoenix we are enjoying continuous rain for about 18 hours.

A tropical storm has entered the gulf of Mexico  and is coming inland our way.   Delightful cool fall rain.

A slow drizzle so that the moisture can soak into the ground.

I'm going back to the patio so I can burn a cigarette and enjoy the rain.

It will not surprise me if there will be a thread that we end up playing online chess, checkers, cards and what not. You people are awesome.  I feel very privileged.

We used to have word games.  They were fun.
That was a couple or three forums ago.   Chuckle

Then "covid happened", and everyone (including myself) has been either gloomy or grouchy ever since.

The oarfish — an elusive inhabitant of the deep

It is the world’s largest bony fish,

More on the wooly Bear worm  Flowerysmile

Do Woolly Bear Caterpillars Really Forecast Winter Weather?
Between 1948 and 1956, Dr. Curran’s average
brown-segment counts ranged from 5.3 to 5.6 out of the
13-segment total, meaning that the brown band took up more
than a good third of the woolly bear’s body.
The corresponding winters were milder than average,

and Dr. Curran concluded that the folklore has
some merit and might be true.

That was somewhat encouraging.  At least it shows some rain in the not too distant future.

It has been terribly dry here in Oregon.
And the temps still in the mid and upper 80's !!  Not normal at all !!
(Today was 87 here.  Normal would be in the low 70's.)

@PickleSnout where is the fire??

There are a lot of fires in Washington state.
My son was in an evacuation zone until yesterday.  Sad
Thank the Good Lord, they seem to have that one contained, although it will be a few days before it is out.
